Tallgrass Buffalo Sweat Stout

I bought a 4-Pint Pack of Tallgrass Brewery's Buffalo Sweat Stout at Schnucks yesterday.  Tallgrass is a brewery out of Manahattan, KS that recently became available in the SEMO Area.  I really enjoyed this beer.  It was an easy drinking Stout that would make a great introduction to dark beer or nice easy drinking Stout for any occasion.  I will buy this one again.  Here is  what Tallgrass Brewery, BeerAdvocate, and RateBeer have to say.
Enjoy & Cheers!

TALLGRASS DESCRIPTION

BUFFALO SWEAT
(ABV 5.0%, 20 IBU)
We love this beer here at the brewery, and think you will have one of those “I’ve never-tasted-a-beer-like-that” kind of moments when you try it!

What we really like about this beer is the smoothness that brewing with cream sugar brings to the palate. This smoothness balances out the copious quantities of roasted barley used in the brewing process to create a rich, complex, and delicious beer. If you have not been a stout drinker in the past, give this beer a try. It might just change your mind about how dark beers should taste. It tastes so rich, but is surprisingly easy to drink!

Can’t find the sweat? Don’t sweat it. Just ask for Buffalo Sweat at your local liquor store or your favorite tavern.

RateBeer - 69 Overall

New Belgium Lips of Faith "Le Fleur Misseur"

Okay, I am going to try something new.  When I have a new Craft Beer I enjoy I will share it with you.  I am not going to rate the beer, as this sort of critique is very subjective and my palate is still in its infancy, but I will tell you that is worth tasting for yourself and give you information on the beer.  So, here we go....

Last night I tried New Belgium's Lips of Faith Series "Le Fleur Misseur" that I picked up at Schnucks in Cape.  I definately recommend giving it a try.  I have just recently started exploring Belgian-style ales and I found this one to be a really enjoyable, easy drinking craft beer for my palate.   Below I have included the beer description and professional reviews found on New Belgium's website as well as the links to the the reviews at BeerAdvocate and RateBeer.  Enjoy!
Cheers!

New Belgium's Website

LE FLEUR MISSEUR

Deep burnished gold with a slight haze, Le Fleur Misseur opens with pineapple, clove and honey notes. Dry-hopping produces a flower leaf aroma supported by tones of fresh bread and honey. Bottle conditioned with our special house strain of Brettanomyces (wild ale) yeast, Le Fleur finishes dry and slightly herbal.

Produced for New Belgium coworkers to celebrate our 15th anniversary, Le Fleur has roots in the earliest days of our history. In 1988 founder Jeff Lebesch sat weary on the side of a Belgian road when a young lad passing by picked a delicate yellow flower and offered it to Jeff.

“Le Fleur, Misseur?” Jeff misspelled the boy’s comment in his journal as he accepted the offering. A treasured memory, a beer to treasure.

New Belgium Website Reviews

Scott Neuman, Executive Chef of ¡Oba! Restaurant and Hall Street Grill

Ancho Chile seasoned Buttermilk Fried Chicken drizzled with honey and served on top of Blue Corn Waffles

I chose the chicken and waffle pairing with Le Fleur Misseur? for a few reasons. First, I thought that the ancho chilies and the blue corn would give the dish an earthy dynamic that would pair well with the spicy, herbal flavors from Hallertau dry hopping technique and rustic wild yeast bottle conditioning character. Secondly, the lovely acidity in the beer would cut right through the richness of the buttermilk fried chicken. I’ve always enjoyed a little honey drizzled on my fried chicken, and I thought that it would moisten the waffle at the same time accentuate the honey malt notes in the beer.

Suzanne Wolcott, Cheese Consultant, Chicago, Illinois
Cheese: A creamy Robiola (with part goat milk) or an earthy, classic (meaning slightly funky) French brie or Tomme.

Food: Pasta with wild mushroom ragu

*The brett spicyness in Le Fleur has a white pepper quality that is earthy and slightly funky. Therefore I chose earthy and sublty funky foods which both mirror and highlight the beer. I think it is a mistake to take the beers fruity (pineapple) and clove esters and pair them literally with sweet flavors and baking spices in food.

Chef John Leonardis of the GourmandGuruGroup
LE FLEUR MISSEUR? is a very sophisticated beer with its fresh honeycomb notes and herbal/floral characteristics. Even clove, cinnamon, and a little tropical fruit ~ it's wild and I guess that's the brett (brettanomyces- wild yeast) working. So, even if you are having a night in, wear a tie to dinner, because, like I said, it's sophisticated. I am thinking basil crusted pork loin with candied pears and pickled fennel and spiced goat cheese barley because all these things ingredients in my course would make the perfect bite, just like all the aromas and tastes in Le Fleur Missuer make the perfect sip.

Erin Hughes, one of our fine Liquid Center Representatives, recommends:
I love to grill out. So I would skewer up some mahi mahi, orange bell peppers, pineapple and costoluto heirloom tomatoes. The fish is meaty, but not salty so it won’t overpower the beer and the pineapple will bring out the bretta contribution in Le Fleur. The peppers and tomatoes balance the sweetness with acidity.

Salad as a side with fresh greens and edible flowers (like spicy nasturtiums) accentuate the floral aroma, subtle sweet honey taste and spicy Hallertau dry-hopping.

For dessert, grilled pears stuffed with a soft cheese like chevre or capricho de cabra. (There both softer cheeses, more silky to go with the LeF’s creamy mouthfeel). Drizzle vanilla honey and dust some cinnamon on top to highlight the wild yeast’s (Brettanomyces) clove.

If just looking to snack, put out a plate of Spanish Marcona almonds. They’re a little sweet, but you still get the salty fix and they go great on a plate next to chevre on artisan crackers with fig spread to complete the sweet and salty fusion.

SEMO Craft Beer News
This week I found out Tractor's American Classic American Grill has dropped Schlafly Pale Ale from their beer list.

Celebrations posted on Facebook yesterday that they have new beers coming in for both of their locations today (I can't wait to get the list!).

Cape Girardeau's resident About Beer writer Bryce Eddings posted three blogs this week. Check them out:

In St Louis Craft Beer News, STL Hops just posted that Hill Brewing Company in Ferguson, MO, will be putting on their first ever beer dinner on Thursday, September 2nd from 6:30-9PM and that iTap in Chesterfield will be hosting a special Goose Island Tasting Event that will feature Goose Island Beers that have never made their way to the STL Area .

In National News, NPR ran a story on Craft Brewing, 'Gypsy Brewer' Spreads Craft Beer Gospel.

And, I was excited to read on a Beernews.org post, that in January 2011 Sierra Nevada will be bottling and kegging a new Double IPA, Hoptimum. I have no idea if this will make it to SEMO or not. Fingers Crossed! Hoptimum Double IPA was originally a Sierra Nevada Beer Camp creation that was made for SF Beer Week 2010. (Did I mention I think the logo for SF Beer Week is one of the coolest logo's I have ever seen!)

Have a great weekend everyone and keep spreading the word about better beer!
Cheers!

Primo Vino! Tasting - Beer Descriptions

I have researched all 12 Craft Beers that Primo Vino! will be sampling tomorrow from 6-8pm. Here are the notes from ratebeer.com, Avery's website, and Jolly Pumpkin's website. Enjoy & Cheers!

Bell's Beers

Bell's Oberon
ABV: 6%
An American wheat ale made with European ingredients. Belgium wheat malt and Czech Saaz hops provide a spicy, fruity balance to this seasonal ale. (Formerly known as Solsun)

Bell's Third Coast
ABV: 5.2%
A beautiful golden-hued brew in the pale ale style. The lightest of our beers, it includes a nice hop flavor and all pale malts.

Bell's Pale Ale
ABV: 5.3%
A refreshing, blond colored pale ale. Bell’s pale ale is made almost exclusively from pale malt. It expresses a spicy floral hop aroma and taste.

Bell's Amber Ale
ABV: 6%
Made from mostly pale malt and some Munich and caramel malts. These add a little sweetness, which is balanced by more hops. The result is a rich color and fruity flavor.

Bell's Best Brown Ale
ABV: 5.8%
This is a rich brown ale perfect for the fall. Exclusive use of all Belgian specialty malts give a rich yet dry finish to this beer.

Avery Beers

Avery duganA IPA
Beer Style: Double India Pale Ale
Hop Variety: Chinook, Centennial and Columbus
Malt Variety: Two-row barley, dark aromatic, caramel malt
OG: 1.076 ABV: 8.5% IBUs: 93
Color: Deep Gold
Availability: Limited release. Inaugural batch was released in early October '09. Brewed whenever we have a little extra tank space and a desire for dank hops!

Lupulin Rapture Incarnate! As fervent devotees of hops, we found ourselves on a quest to create a transcendental IPA capable of quenching our voracious lupulin desires. Our mantra became "unity of bitterness, hop flavor and aroma." Enlightened, duganA IPA was born: A brutally bitter, dank, piney and resinous ale designed for those seeking a divine hop experience.

Avery The Czar Imperial Stout
Beer Style: Russian Imperial Stout
Hop Variety: Magnum, German Hallertau
Malt Variety: Two-row barley, black, chocolate, carafa 111, cara 8, cara 45, honey malt
OG: 1.100 ABV: 11.03% IBUs: 60
Color: Black
Availability: Seasonally produced from November through February. 22oz. bombers, 1/6BBL and 1/2BBL kegs.

Behold the stunning crimson hues through the inky blackness. Inhale the noble Hallertau hops, spicy and floral. Savor the flavors redolent of English toffee, rich mocha, sweet molasses, candied currants and a hint of anise. We highly recommend cellaring additional bottles, as the Czar will continue to mature and become denser

Avery White Rascal Belgian-Style Wheat Ale
Beer Style: Belgian White Ale
Hop Variety: Czech Saaz
Malt Variety: Two-row barley, Belgian wheat
OG: 1.050 ABV: 5.6% IBUs: 10
Color: White

A truly authentic Belgian style wheat or "white" ale, this Rascal is unfiltered (yup, that's yeast on the bottom) and cleverly spiced with coriander and Curacao orange peel producing a refreshingly fruity thirst quencher.

Avery New World Porter
Beer Style: Robust Porter
Hop Variety: Columbus, Fuggles
Malt Variety: Two-row barley, Munich 10L, chocolate, black, caramel 120L
OG: 1.065 ABV: 6.7% IBUs: 45
Color: Black
Availability: Seasonal, January to April. Six-packs, cases, 1/6BBL and 1/2BBL kegs.

A traditional black porter, with a surprise twist - it's dry-hopped!! We've expanded the porter category a bit, adding a delightful, dry hop aroma to blend with the sweet caramel and chocolate characteristics of a Robust Porter.

Avery Ellie's Brown Ale
Beer Style: American Brown Ale
Hop Variety: Bullion, Cascade, Fuggles
Malt Variety: Two-row barley, chocolate, Munich 10L, caramel 120L
OG: 1.056 ABV: 5.5% IBUs: 17
Color: Deep Russet
Availability: Year round. Six-packs, cases, 1/6BBL and 1/2BBL kegs.

This beautiful, deep russet brew has the sweet and somewhat nutty character of Adam Avery's late (1992-2002) Chocolate Lab, for which it is named. Crystal and chocolate malts give this beer a brown sugar maltiness with hints of vanilla and nuts, while subtle hopping gives it an overall drinkability that's second to none, just like Ellie!

Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales

Jolly Pumpkin Oro de Calabaza
Brewed in the Franco-Belgian tradition of strong golden ales. Spicy and peppery with a gentle hop bouquet and the beguiling influence of wild yeast.

GABF 2004 Gold Medal & GABF 2005 Bronze

Year round production
8% Alc./Vol.

Jolly Pumpkin E.S. Bam - Extra Special Farmhouse Ale
A Bam celebration of excess. More malt, more hops, same vivacious personality.

Seasonal released in April
4.7% Alc./Vol.

Charleville Witch's Brew'mmm Belgian Style Pumpkin Ale & Hop Harvest Ale

Exciting news from Charleville Vinyard & Microbrewery! Pictured is a preview of the label for this years Witch's Brew'mmm Belgian Style Pumpkin Ale. This year, Charleville Brewmaster & Winemaker, Tony Saballa changed things up by taking the Pumpkin Ale from 5.5% to 7.0% ABV and fermenting it with a Belgian yeast strain. It was just in the kettle boiling yesterday. I will keep you posted on its release date.

Plus, Charleville also harvested some of their Cascade Estate Hops to brew an amped up version of their Tornado Valley Amber Ale they are calling "Big Red". It clocks in at 7.5% ABV and is hopped at a rate of 3lbs per barrel! Awesome! I can't wait to try this one! It is scheduled to be available in 3 weeks only at the Charleville Taproom. Don't miss it!

Cheers!
